Allmendingen bei Bern is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Allmendingen is first mentioned in 1256 as Alwandigen under the control of Rudolf von Alwandingen.[3]

Until the end of 1992, Allmendingen was a part of Rubigen, which it separated from on January 1, 1993 to become a separate municipality.

Geography

Allmendingen bei Bern has an area, as of 2009, of 3.8 km2 (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 2.47 km2 (0.95 sq mi) or 65.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.81 km2 (0.31 sq mi) or 21.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.37 km2 (0.14 sq mi) or 9.7% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.06 km2 (15 acres) or 1.6% is either rivers or lakes and 0.07 km2 (17 acres) or 1.8% is unproductive land.[4] The highest point of Allmendingen is the "Erdburg" with an altitude of 652 meters, and the lowest location is the river Aare with an altitude of 514 meters.

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 0.3% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 4.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.9%. 21.3% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 47.4% is used for growing crops and 14.7% is pastures, while 2.9% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams. All the unproductive area is unproductive vegatation.[4]

It is located in the southern suburbs of Bern between Rubigen and Muri bei Bern. It includes the village of Allmendingen and the hamlet of Märchligen. Allmendingen belongs to the parish of Münsingen.

Demographics

Allmendingen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 515.[1] As of 2007, 5.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -11.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.2%), with French being second most common ( 1.4%) and English being third ( 1.4%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 43.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (18.4%), the SPS (12.8%) and the Green Party (8.3%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 20.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 65.9% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.7%. In Allmendingen about 87.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Allmendingen has an unemployment rate of 1.11%. As of 2005, there were 53 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 14 businesses involved in this sector. 74 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 2 businesses in this sector. 56 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 12 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
